Anticoagulant and factor Xa-like activities of Tityus discrepans scorpion venom Acta Toxicol. Argent.
Brazón,Josmary; Guerrero,Belsy; Suze,D; Sevcik, Carlos,Gina; Arocha-Piñango,Carmen L.
Tityus discrepans venom (TdV) produces a variety of haemostatic manifestations including alveoli fbrin deposition and/ or prothrombin and partial thromboplastin time (PT, PTT) alterations in mammals. In vitro studies have demonstrated that TdV contains tissue plasminogen activator-like (t-PA), fbrinolytic and plasmin inhibitory compounds and produces platelets activation through GPVI and a novel Src-dependent signalling pathway. The aim of this study is to describe the initial characterization of procoagulant and anticoagulant components from TdV. This venom was fractionated by exclusion molecular chromatography on a Sephadex G-50 column. The eluted material was collected as fve fractions called S1 to S5. These fractions and the whole venom were used to...

Enzymatic and toxinological activities of Hypnale hypnale (hump-nosed pit viper) venom and its fractionation by ion exchange high performance liquid chromatography J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Tan,CH; Sim,SM; Gnanathasan,CA; Fung,SY; Ponnudurai,G; Pailoor,J; Tan,NH.
Hypnale hypnale (hump-nosed pit viper) has been recently identified as one of the medically important venomous snakes in Sri Lanka and on the southwestern coast of India. The characterization of its venom is essential for understanding the pathophysiology of envenomation and for optimizing its management. In the present study, the biological properties of Hypnale hypnale venom and venom fractions obtained using Resource Q ion exchange chromatography were determined. The venom exhibited toxic activities typical of pit viper venom, comparable to that of its sister taxon, the Malayan pit viper (Calloselasma rhodostoma). Particularly noteworthy were its high activities of thrombin-like enzyme, proteases, phospholipase A2, L-amino acid oxidase and...

Porcine Uterine and Placental Extracellular Matrix Molecules Throughout Pregnancy International Journal of Morphology
Sanchis,E. G; Cristofolini,A. L; Taglialegna,A; Merkis,C. I.
The molecules that constitute the extracellular matrix are important in several functions related to tissue support and cell-cell, cell-extracellular matrix interaction. Among the macromolecules that constitute the mentioned matrix we find osteopontin, fibrinogen and collagen. The present study was undertaken to analyze the rol of osteopontin, fibrinogen and collagen in uterine-placental interface during normal porcine gestation. Uterine and placental tissues from crossbred gilts of 30 (n=5), 60 (n=5), 70 (n=5) and 114 (at term, n=5) days of gestation were used. Macroscopic analysis of the embryos/fetuses allowed us to determine their gestational age by means of the crown-rump lenght. Haematoxylin-Eosin and Masson's Trichrome dyes along with light...

Serum concentrations of acute phase proteins in goats and ewes with naturally acquired Staphylococcus aureus mastitis Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Simplício,K.M.M.G.; Rocha,T.G.; Sanchez,D.C.C.; Cotrim,F.S.; Silva,P.C.; Fagliari,J.J..
ABSTRACT Serum protein concentrations, including acute phase proteins (APPs), of goats and ewes with naturally acquired Sthaphylococcus aureus mastitis were determined by means of SDS-PAGE electrophoresis to evaluate the relevance of these APPs as biomarkers of the disease in these species. Fifteen healthy goats and 5 goats with naturally acquired staphylococci mastitis, as well as fifteen healthy ewes and 5 ewes with staphylococci mastitis were submitted to daily blood sampling during 7 days. In goats, an increase of 570%, 125%, 621%, and 279% in serum concentrations of ceruloplasmin, fibrinogen, haptoglobin and α1-acid glycoprotein, respectively, was observed. In sheep the increase in serum concentrations of ceruloplasmin, fibrinogen, haptoglobin and...

Surgical adhesives J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
THOMAZINI-SANTOS,I. A.; BARRAVIERA,S. R. C. S.; MENDES-GIANNINI,M. J. S.; BARRAVIERA,B..
The authors have performed a literature review of surgical adhesives, such as cyanoacrylate, collagen gelatin, and fibrin glue. They have included different types of commercial and non-commercial fibrin sealants and have reported on the different components in these adhesives, such as fibrinogen, cryoprecipitate, bovine thrombin, and thrombin-like fraction of snake venom.
